It seems to me that in some way or another, all of us are reckoning with our past experiences and the experiences we have when we are young have an outsized influence on how we see and feel about ourselves later on. My friend, Chelsea Ewing, was arrested not long after her 13th birthday. She was in no way prepared for that. She'd been a good kid basically, who made a bad choice one day at school to do a favor for a friend. She ended up in a cell at first and then spending the next few years of her life at a place in West Texas called Girlstown. The whole thing had a profound affect on her that continued to resonate into her adult life. We wrote a song about it and I released it as a single last week. I'm proud of the song and the recording but even more proud of my friend Chelsea. It's a brave thing to bare your soul like that. It's out there on all the usual platforms and if you like you can even buy a digital copy right here on bandcamp. I hope you'll give it a listen.
And speaking of out there, I'll be out there on the road again soon. I've got a few gigs coming up in some of my favorite places. Starting with Rolla, MO. I used to play the weekend closest to Valentine's Day every year at a wonderful folk club and restaurant there called the Blue Heron Cafe and Rookery. Very happy times for me! The Blue Heron is long gone I'm afraid, but not the friends I made there. I'll be back in Rolla on Friday February 9 at a beautifu theater called the Cedar Street Playhouse. The show is being sponsored by the Ozark Actors Theatre. The stunningly good Mike Lindauer will be joining me there on bass and harmonies. The next night (Saturday February 10) I'll be at Focal Point up in St. Louis (the Maplewood part). I love that place and have had some of my favorite shows there! Mike will be with me again but we'll also be joined by the incomparable Andy Ploof on everything he can get his hands on. More shows in the next few weeks after that including Mama's Coffeehouse in Bloomfield Hills, MI, the Corpus Christi Songwriters Festival, and even one at City Winery in Nashville, TN. Won't have to drive too far for that one. All are listed below, as usual, and you can also check out the calendar on my website right here.
Mike and I are also headed back to Scotland and Ireland this Spring and bringing some friends along - like you maybe! We still have room for 1 or 2 more on our Scotland trip and another few spots for Ireland too. Here are the links for those.
Scotland - April 23 - May 6
Ireland - May 12 - 21
That's all for now. Hope to see you out there one place or another. Be well until then!
Love,
Buddy Mondlock
